Susan Miller, Principal Consultant, Miller Associates

Susan Miller advises school districts and state education agencies on the academic performance, enrollment, facility, operating cost, and governance crises that traditional district structures aren’t built to solve. She brings a rare depth of K-12 experience to that work: four years as an elected school board director during one of the most turbulent stretches in her district’s history, and nine years consulting to districts nationwide on enrollment, cost, and facility issues. That hands-on governance and consulting background is backed by an earlier career in municipal investment banking and credit analysis, giving her a financial fluency few K-12 advisors bring to the table.

Susan was one of five elected board directors of Jefferson County (Colorado) Public Schools — one of the nation’s largest school districts — during a tumultuous four-year term. In that time, Jeffco went through three different superintendents, navigated the COVID-19 pandemic, confronted a financial crisis that forced the closure of 21 schools in a single year, and identified multiple scandals within the district’s $860 million capital program. Watching three superintendents try to lead through that taught Susan how exposed the seat is when a board and a community both need someone to hold accountable — and how much difference it makes when a superintendent has someone managing the crisis alongside them, rather than just watching from the boardroom. That perspective now shapes how she works: not as an extension of board oversight, but a trusted advisor a superintendent can actually lean on.
